Here is the pound for pound best boxer in the world, FMW JR. carrying out a nice relaxed skipping routine.

So, the fundamental concept behind any fitness related plan is how the body uses energy.  I will break these down into simple phases, and then cover each one over the next few days;

BASIC INFORMATION ON ENERGY SOURCES

The energy ‘currency’ is known as ATP (adenosine triphosphate, for those that are interested).  This is the simplest form of energy – effectively what your fats, carbohydrates and proteins are broken down and converted into.  The only problem is your body has very limited stores of ATP and therefore needs to constantly resynthesise it.

Fats produce the most ATP molecules per molecule of fat, but needs lots of oxygen to oxidise (break it down) [hence why it is so hard to shift the fat], and the high ATP production is a reason as to why eating too much fat leads essentially to fat stores in the body – as your body does not need that amount of energy generally.

Carbs (glucose), in comparison to fat, create roughly 1/10th the number of molecules of ATP per molecule of glucose, and are the easiest macronutrient to use as an energy source.

Proteins are only used to create energy during times of starvation, which is why muscle breakdown occurs during extreme starvation.

So that is a basic (hopefully) overview of the three macronutrients (carbs, fats & protein), and how/why they are used as energy sources.  And hopefully this will help you to understand in future, how you can reach your goals through monitoring your diet alongside a well thought out exercise plan.
